WALES — By the time the Oak Hill girls’ soccer team found some offense Wednesday, the Raiders already needed more production than they could deliver.
Oak Hill fell behind early and despite a strong second half, couldn’t overcome the deficit in a 3-0 loss to Winslow.
The Black Raiders got goals from Kaylee Constable and Emily Farrell in the first half as Oak Hill struggled to offer much of a counter. Alliyah Veilleux added the third goal late in the second half.
“We just didn’t have it today — period,” Oak Hill coach Brant Remington said. “That wasn’t us. Sometimes you just don’t play as well as you need to . We didn’t have enough people on their game.”
The 2-3 Raiders have lost every other game thus far this season and know they can’t afford to continue that trend. Oak Hill finished just out of the playoff hunt last year at 4-8-2.
“We’ve got to get wins like this,” said Remington. “We know we’re a better team. In Western Maine B, you can’t afford to lose these games. There’s only eight spots and you’re in the same division as Falmouth, Yarmouth and York. When you throw in Lisbon and Mountain Valley, who play a C schedule and rack up a bunch of wins, we’re fighting for only a couple of spots.”
Winslow moved the ball effectively early and held the Raiders to just three shots in the first half. Constable made it 1-0 with a rush down the right side with 24:18 left. Then just over 10 minutes later, Farrell chipped in a loose ball in front with 14:11 remaining.
Oak Hill’s only quality shot on net came with four minutes left when Sarah Desjardins had a bid from the right side. The Raiders also had a Becca Belaire rush up the middle that was broken up by a defender and a Megan Rodrigue cross off a corner that couldn’t be converted in front.
“We just didn’t have any luck,” said Remington. “So many times we were so close, and it would bounce out of bounds.”
In the second half, the Raiders tried to spark the offense. Goaltender Darby Beaulieu was put on the front line while Desiree Johns took over in net. Oak Hill had new energy offensively and managed to put the pressure on.
“We changed to four midfielders and kept three forwards up front to get more offense,” said Remington, whose team was missing a starter and the first sub off the bench to injury. “We did generate more offense, but we just missed the connections at the end.”
Hannah Langlois fed a ball from the midfield to the front where Abby Goulet shot wide. A corner deflected off Beaulieu in front but was saved by Winslow keeper Elizabeth Ferry. Rodrigue had a free kick hit the crossbar. Johns did her share in goal for Oak Hill. She made a diving save that preserved the 2-0 lead.
“I have a young team,” said Winslow coach Scott Wood. “The second half, I don’t want to say we let down. It was more like they picked up their game a lot at halftime. We were fortunate. They had one off the crossbar and corner kick after corner kick.”
Despite the increase in opportunities, the Raiders couldn’t get that first goal to spark even more momentum. Then with 3:49 left Veilleux scored with a nice shot from in front.
“We did enough and kept it out,” said Wood. “That’s about it.”
