PERU — Animal Control Officer Dan Carrier told selectmen Monday night that he had spoken with a state official on the problem of cats running wild and was told there are no ordinances on cats.

Carrier said that when he received a complaint he thought the cats were strays and he offered to lend his trap so the cats could be captured. He told the complaining party they could trap the cats and take them to the kennel.

“When I found out the cats were not strays but belonged to a neighbor, I didn’t loan the trap,” Carrier said.

A state official told Carrier that the public should be informed about the problem.

Acting Chairman Tim Holland said that both parties should be able to resolve the issue themselves.

Carrier said in another issue with strays, the state told him that people who leave food outside are not only inviting cats, but wild animals to roam their property as well.

In other news, Holland announced that a horse trailer in front of the old Peru School is there to collect bottles in an ongoing drive to raise funds to build restrooms on the ball field. Holland said any money donations should be turned into the office. Labor and material donations are also sought to build the facility.

The board appointed Jim Pulsifer to the Finance Committee. There will be a finance meeting Thursday night at 6 p.m.

The board is still considering what to do with the Town Office roof.

Selectman Rick Vaughn has been looking at what it would cost to put on a pitched roof on the building rather than redoing the flat roof, which has already been done three times, according to Holland.
