AUBURN — Lewiston-Auburn has a strong Catholic presence, and controversies surrounding the Catholic Church spark a deep interest here. Now, with the publication of his novel, “The Priestess and the Pope,” former Lewiston Mayor Paul Dionne has made a creative contribution to understanding the historic roots of these controversies.

On Thursday, Sept. 30, Dionne will read from and discuss his book at the Auburn Public Library. Based on actual events, the novel revolves around a key turning point in church history when, in the fifth century, the bishop of Rome issued an epistle forbidding the further ordination of women as priests.

Raised as a Catholic, Dionne attended a parochial grammar school and Lewiston High School. He is a Vietnam War veteran and a graduate of University of Maine School of Law. More recently, he has served on the governor’s cabinet and as executive director of the Maine Worker’s Compensation Board.

The father of two grown daughters, he has a longstanding interest in the changing roles of women in society and the historic roles of women in the Catholic Church.

The free program will begin at noon in the library’s Androscoggin Community Room. Attendees are welcome to bring a bagged lunch or may order from The Library Cafe. The library will provide drinks and desserts. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. The book may also be purchased at www.authorpauldionne.com.
