BETHEL — Seniors Kayla Merrill and Katie Sumner each scored first-half goals and the defense stymied Jay in the second half as Telstar improved to 7-1 with at 2-1 victory over Jay on Wednesday afternoon.

Merrill started the scoring with a goal 10 minutes into the game on an assist by Lindsay Merrill. The Tigers (3-5) responded five minutes later with the equalizer from Jahna Couture. Sumner capped the scoring with the go-ahead goal assisted by Naomi Ellsworth inside 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

The score would hold as neither team would find the back of the net in the second half. Rebels goalie Hali Barter made a pair of saves in the victory while Ashlee Quirrion had 15 stops in the loss.

Mountain Valley 5, St. Dom’s 1

RUMFORD — Sophomore Peyton Provencher scored a pair of goals and added an assist to help lead Mountain Valley to a 5-1 victory over St. Dom’s in field hockey action Wednesday.

Provencher opened the scoring with her first goal assisted by Nicole Burgess, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Burgess then assisted Whitney Ruff with her lone goal. Saints Taylor Tarr cut the lead in half with a goal assisted by Jenna Fongemie for a 2-1 halftime score.

Junior Becca Maifeld found the back of the net twice in the second half, once assisted by Provencher to seal the victory for Mountain Valley (5-3). Emily Gallant stopped six shots for the Falcons (0-7-1), while Marisa Zamrock turned away 22 for the Saints.

Lisbon 5, Hall Dale 1

FARMINGDALE — MaKayla Stevens scored four goals and had an assist to lead the Lisbon Greyhounds to a 5-1 victory over Hall Dale in an MVC field hockey clash.

Stevens found the back of the net three times in the first half while assisting on Allie Fitzgerald’s goal, giving the ‘Hounds a 4-0 halftime lead. Hall Dale’s Wendy Goldman opened the scoring in the second half with its lone score. Stevens rounded out the scoring with an unassisted goal.

Lindsey Whitney, Angel Strout, and Fitzgerald all assisted on Stevens’ goals. Haylee Jamison stopped a trio of shots for Lisbon (4-4) while Lexi Moran turned away 16 shots for Hall Dale (3-5).

Livermore Falls 8, Dirigo 0

LIVERMORE — Liz Cote, Kim Theriault, and Samantha Greenwood each scored a pair of goals as Livermore Falls stayed undefeated with a blanking of Dirigo, 8-0, Wednesday afternoon in field hockey action.

Cote opened the scoring with the first two scores assisted by Theriault. Erin Gats and Samantha Greenwoood rounded out the first-half scoring for the Andies (8-0). Theriault netted a pair of second-half goals to go along with her four assists. Greenwood and Megan Therrien also added second-half goals.

Caylee Morris recorded two saves in the shutout while Dirigo (1-7) stopper Betsy Noyes made four saves in the defeat.

Girls’ soccer

Freeport 3, Poland 2

POLAND — Trailing by two goals at halftime, Freeport roared back with three unanswered goals to slip past Poland 3-2 in an WMC  girls’ soccer game Wednesday.

The Knights (3-4) jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage on goals by Emily Bolduc and Emma Turton. Bolduc and Turton assisted on each other’s goal.

Freeport (5-1-1)  reversed course in the second half. After Katee Poulin and Jess Hench scored to tie the game, Aubrey Pennell scored the game-winner with 11 minutes remaining.

Cassie Mocciola had five saves for Poland, while Abby Roney stopped three shots fro Freeport.

Boys’ soccer

Hall-Dale 2, Lisbon 0
LISBON — John McNaughton and Sam Shepherd each scored a goal in the second half Wednesday as Hall-Dale pulled out a 2-0 victory over Lisbon in MVC boys’ soccer action.

McNaughton and Shepherd also split time in net for the Bulldogs (3-3), combining for fives saves to notch the shutout.

Shane Tanguay turned aside seven shots in goal for the Greyhounds (3-3).

Gray-New Gloucester 6, Traip 0
GRAY — Kolby Arnold registered a hat trick to lead Gray-New Gloucester to a 6-0 rout over Traip in a WMC boys’ soccer matchup Wednesday.

Josh Kane chipped in for the Patriots (4-3) with a pair of goals, while a single tally from Craig Moreau completed the scoring.

Ryan Cavallaro needed only three saves to notch the shutout. Chris Montembeau turned aside 12 shots in net for Traip (1-4-1).

Telstar 3, Carrabec 0
NORTH ANSON — Tyler Brown netted a goal in each half Wednesday as Telstar rolled to a 3-0 victory over Carrabec in a MVC boys’ soccer tilt Wednesday.

Dan Vaughn gave the Rebels (4-1-1) a 1-0 advantage when he converted a pass from Nick Mills in the first frame. Mills was credited with two assists for Telstar, while Elek Pew also contributed with an assist.

Rick James made nine saves for Telstar, while Brandon LeHay turned back 11 shots between the posts for the Cobras.
