AMHERST, Mass. — Amherst College ran for a pair of touchdowns, threw for two others, returned a fumble for six points and were a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts to completely shut down Bates College in a 44-0 rout Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats, playing a new triple-option offense, struggled to establish a rhythm. Quarterback Ryan Katon was 7-of-23 and threw for 67 yards on the day.
The running backs gained just 76 yards, with sophomroe Patrick George and senior Jared Jammal leading the way with 21 yards apiece. Shawn Doherty caught a team-high four passes for 30 yards.
Bates freshman Andrew Kukesh accounted for the game’s only interception, picking off the Lord Jeff’s quarterback Alex Vetras in the second quarter on a spectacular catch down the left sideline.
Maritime 47, Husson 21
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. — With Maritime trailing 21-19 in the third quarter, sophmore quarterback Joe Dickey scored three straight rushing touchdowns to propel the Privateers past Husson 47-21 in football action Saturday.
The Privateers (4-0) amassed 511 yards of total offense, while keeping the Eagles (0-4) to just 162 yards.
The Eagles took their first lead of the season when the oepning kickoff of the second half was returned 98 yards for a touchdown and the PAT kick by Ivan Somerville was good, giving Husson a 21-19 lead.
Williams 33, Bowdoin 15
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Bowdoin College was doomed by five turnovers in a season-opening loss to Williams College, 33-15, in the NESCAC football season opener Saturday.
The loss overshadowed a successful starting debut for quarterback R.J. Shea, who tossed for 316 yards and a pair of scores, along with the efforts of receivers Brendan Garner and Pat Noone.
The Ephs jumped out to a
14-0 lead after a pair of long first-half drives before a late surge by Bowdoin drew the score to 14-12.
Williams collected a 53-yard interception return and Bowdoin notched a 26-yard field goal in the third quarter. But, the Mules gave up two unanswered touchdowns in the final quarter to go down in defeat.
Trinity 33 Colby 6
HARTFORD, Conn. — Freshman running back Ben Crick rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown, and senior quarterback Craig Drusbosky added 180 yards and a pair of throwing touchdowns to lead Trinity to a 33-6 victory over Colby in their NESCAC football opener.
The Mules spoiled the shutout with an eight-play, 63 yard drive that culminated with a 4-yard pass from quarterback Nick Kmetz to junior tight end Spencer Merwin with 9:24 remaining in the game.
Men’s soccer
UMF 3, Green Mountain 0
POULTNEY, Vt. — Sophomore Jordan Hale tallied a pair of first half goals to lead Maine-Farmington to a 3-0 victory over Green Mountain College in NAC men’s soccer action Saturday.
Hale notched his first with 13:30 remaining in the half. He was the quickest to the rebound on his own shot, slotting home a goal for the Beavers (2-2-2). UMF controlled the tempo of the match, notching 21 shots to 8 for the Eagles, including a sizable 11-0 advantage in the opening 45 minutes.
The Beavers added insurance when Sean Raph scored in the 64th minute.
Bates 2, Trinity 1
HARTFORD, Conn. — Senior Patrick Jackson scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute to lead Bates to a 2-1 victory over Trinity.
The Bobcats (2-2-1) got the scoring started late in the first half with a goal from junior back David Wood.
The Bantams (2-3) evened the score early in the second frame when junior forward Dan Mayernick buried a shot into the upper left corner of the net.
In overtime, senior Tyler Mehegan took the ball up through the flank and delivered a pass into the box through the seam between two defenders, where Jackson drilled it from about 15 yards out for his second game-winning goal of the year.
Women’s soccer
UMF 3, Green Mountain 0
POULTNEY, Vt. — Senior Katie Cray scored the eventual game-winning goal just over three minutes into the contest as Maine-Farmington defeated Green Mountain 3-0 in NAC women’s soccer action.
The Beavers’ (3-2-1) leading goal-scorer Noelle Moulton notched her third of the season just after the halftime interval, and Alida Peake rounded out the scoring in the 60th minute.
Trinity 3, Bates 0
HARTFORD, Conn. — Junior Leigh Howard scored two goals to lead Trinity to a 3-0 win over Bates in NESCAC women’s soccer action Saturday.
Howard’s first gaol came in the 16th minute of action. Later in the first half, junior Katie Giberson scored her first career goal with the Bantams (3-0-1).
Junior Amie Burns made 12 saves for the Bobcats (2-2-1), facing a 16-6 disparity in shots taken in the game.
Field hockey
Trinity 5, Bates 1
HARTFORD, Conn. — Hadley Duncan scored two goals to lead No. 11 ranked Trinity to a 5-1 field hockey victory over Bates.
Payson Sword got the scoring started for the Bantams (3-2) with a goal in the 11th minute. Lyndsey Shepard followed that up with her first career collegiate goal.
With just under four minutes remaining in the half, Bates junior Lyndsay Beaton brought the Bobcats within a goal after finding the back of the net for her team- and career-high third goal this season.
