SUMNER — A Wrinkle in Thyme Farm will celebrate the opening of its Tesseract fiber center next month at the Natural Fiber Showcase.
Farmers Mary Ann Haxton and Marty Elkin are seeking vendors, artists and craftspeople to take part in the grand opening from Oct. 22 to 24. The Tesseract Building is a farm store and learning center for the diversified farm that has an emphasis on fiber.
The building will give people an efficient and cost-effective way to work with fiber arts. Its name is based on a term in the novel “A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. Tesseract basically means doing traditional things in new ways, Elkin said.
The 30-acre farm on Black Mountain Road raises laying hens, sheep and angora goats.
Two grants from Maine Farms for the Future and the Maine Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources helped pay for construction. The latter organization is the state’s lead agency dealing with all aspects of the food system from the field to the table.
The fiber building uses solar energy to wash wool, pick and card, and it has radiant floor heat. There is also a dye kitchen and a farm store in the building.
