PARIS — Fire destroyed a barn on Hebron Road late Tuesday morning.
Firefighters from Paris, Oxford, Hebron and Norway were called to 520 Hebron Road at 11:46 a.m., laying hose up a steep, rocky hill to extinguish the fire in about 15 minutes. The barn was about half a mile from the Hebron Town line.
The investigation into the cause should be concluded Wednesday, fire Chief Brad Frost said.
Although owners Dana and Mary Matthews initially thought their 12 egg-laying chickens were killed in a pen behind the barn, Frost said he saw them running around after the fire was doused.
“I haven’t counted them, but they seem to be all there,” confirmed Matthews, who was still trying to track down a white rooster late Tuesday afternoon.
Matthews said he and his wife were home at the time of the fire but had no hose hooked up to try to stop the flames from spreading.
Matthews said he built the 22- by 22-foot gambrel-roof barn about eight years ago with timbers from a dam dismantled in northern Maine by the Great Northern Paper Co.
The barn had housed goats until this summer, but at the time of the fire contained a riding tractor, Matthews’ tools and items he was preparing to put in a yard sale. The items and equipment were destroyed, he said.
Matthews said he was unsure whether the barn was covered under his insurance policy.
Motorists on Hebron Road were diverted onto Halls Pond Road.
