Lisbon Fire Chief Sean Galipeau said the barn was almost engulfed in fire, and flames were sweeping toward the attached two-unit home when crews first arrived at about 1:40 p.m.
The house at Oak and Pine streets is presently up for sale and had been recently vacated, Galipeau said. There was nobody home when the barn went up in flames.
“The occupants had just loaded up and moved out yesterday,” the chief said.
Lisbon was backed up by firefighters from Topsham, Durham, Sabattus and Lewiston as they struggled to keep flames from blowing into the house and consuming it. When the fire was brought under control, it had been mostly contained to the barn.
“The house is still standing,” Galipeau said “The barn was pretty well gutted.”
A few items left in the barn by the occupants were destroyed, Galipeau said. The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
