BOSTON — The University of Maine’s men’s ice hockey team was selected second in the 2010 Hockey East Men’s Preseason Poll on Wednesday.
Maine finished third in the 2010 Hockey East regular-season standings. The Black Bears defeated University of Massachusetts at Lowell in the quarterfinals, Boston University in the semifinals before falling to Boston College in the championship game.
The squad will see 20 letter-winners return from the 2010 season. The Black Bears return an impressive 90.5 percent of their offense from a year ago. Among the returnees are junior forward and assistant captain Gustav Nyquist, who was named to the Hobey Hat trick last season.
Defensemen Jeff Dimmen and Will O’Neill return to anchor the blue line. O’Neill tallied eight goals and 23 assists for 31 points, while Dimmen, an assistant captain, had 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points. His 12 goals was just one shy of tying the school record for goals in a season by a defenseman.
Men’s soccer
UMF 2, UMM 1
FARMINGTON — Brendon Santry scored 2:51 into overtime to give the University of Maine at Farmington men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over University of Maine at Machias today in non-conference action at Prescott Field on Wednesday.
Santry’s game-winning shot was the lone bid by either team in the extra session. Dillon Clark slid a pass through the box, which Santry, 15 feet from the goalmouth, deposited easily for the 2-1 win. It was the first collegiate goal for Santry.
Zach Good gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at 38:30 when the junior headed in a boot from Patrick Martin. The Clippers evened the match at 1-1 when Pablo Salas followed a kick by Isaiah Eagles at 67:09 before Santry came through for the Beavers in overtime.
Women’s soccer
UMF 1, UMM 0
FARMINGTON — Aimee St. Germain cashed in a Renee Dupre corner kick at 99:13 to lift the University of Maine at Farmington women’s soccer team to a 1-0 overtime win over University of Maine at Machias in non-conference competition at Prescott Field on Wednesday.
Despite outshooting Machias 26-5, the Beavers found themselves in scoreless deadlock at the end of regulation.
Six minutes into the extra period, St. Germain had a wide attempt and Katie Cray was snubbed by Machias keeper Stephanie Wunderley. Shortly after those chances, Dupre had a corner kick that bounced around in the box before St. Germain drilled it into the back of the net for the 1-0 win.
Field hockey
Husson 2, Bates 1
BANGOR — The Husson University women’s soccer team picked up its third overtime victory when Alex Laniewski scored off a pass from Megan Clement, giving the Eagles a 2-1 victory over Bates College in a field hockey game Wednesday .
While both teams seemed to be evenly matched, the Bobcats scored first when Tina Tobin punched her goal in from an assist from Meridith Poore.
With two minutes left in regulation, Husson found the back of the of the Bates net with her sixth goal of the season. Caitlyn Butterfield drove a free kick into the box, which was won by Katie McLaughlin. Laniewski received the pass from McLaughlin, and scored to send the game into overtime.
