Another third-period Lewiston lead evaporated Wednesday night, but the resilient road squad stopped the bleeding before the host team could take over.
Jessyko Bernard led the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies to a win Wednesday, netting the only goal of the shootout to lift his team to a 5-4 win over the Maineiacs.
“It’s great that we got the point, but I’m not happy at all with how we played,” Maineiacs’ coach J.F. Houle said. “We beat ourselves. We had too many turnovers and those led to goals.”
None of the Maineiacs’ three shooters — Sam Carrier, Pierre-Olivier Morin and Jess Tanguy — could solve Mickael Audette in the final battle.
The first shot of the game put the host Huskies on top 1-0 when Bernard beat Lewiston keeper Nick Champion.
Lewiston evened the game up on a power play less than four minutes later as Dillon Fournier blasted the puck from the point through traffic that Sam Henley tipped in traffic past Audette.
Jason Kelly sent the Huskies to the first intermission with a 2-1 lead with his first of the season.
In the second, the Maineiacs came back with some fire. Chris Lalonde, in just his second game, notched his first career goal early to tie it.
Sam Carrier followed that up moments later on a blast to give the visitors their first lead of the night at 3-2.
Lewiston built a 4-2 lead when Cole Hawes put a move on Audette and netted his second of the season.
The Huskies got one of those back at the end of the second, and evened things back up at 4-4 in the opening minute of the third frame.
“We’re going to have a good practice (Thursday), we’re going to break down the video from (Wednesday’s) game, and hopefully Friday we can bounce back and get the win,” Houle said. “We have a good team, and if we work harder and limit those turnovers, we can win games like this.”
