MEXICO — Selectmen in a closed-door session hashed out an agreement with the town of Rangeley for sharing a code enforcement officer at Tuesday’s board meeting.

David Errington, longtime road commissioner, recently resigned that position and will take on the code duties for both towns.

Town Manager John Madigan said the agreement outlines 16 hours per week in Mexico, and 24 hours per week in Rangeley for Errington. Salary and benefits will be divided according to the number of hours in each town.

The contract, not yet signed, will go through June 30, 2011.

The agreement is expected to be signed within the next couple of weeks.

Madigan has assumed the duties of road commissioner.

In other matters Tuesday, the board tabled, again, any action on a General Assistance agreement with neighboring Rumford. Mexico has contracted for services provided by the Rumford welfare director for the past year. However, a special ballot vote in Rumford is scheduled for next month that could severely reduce the hours of the welfare director. The director’s position has already been reduced to two days a week, Madigan said.

Madigan said his town may have to start its own General Assistance program again.

“Winter has the biggest demand for assistance. I’m very concerned there won’t be enough time to handle clients,” he said of the reduction in hours for the Rumford welfare director.

The board will take up the General Assistance matter at its next meeting Oct. 19, which is after the Rumford vote.

The board also awarded the contract for the purchase of 23,000 gallons of heating oil to Community Energy of Rumford at a cost of 16.25 cents over rack price.
