LEWISTON — The Atrium Art Gallery at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn campus will present two opportunities for exploring new techniques in textile arts. Held in conjunction with the current exhibition, “Altering Matters: New Work by Maine Members of the Surface Design Association,” the workshops will be offered by SDA members. Both workshops are appropriate for all levels of experience, beginner to more advanced.

Dyeing Silk Scarves will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 16. Taught by Katherine Harding, the workshop will take participants through the steps from washing to dyeing to ironing a finished silk scarf. Some history of dyes, silk and color will be part of the hands-on workshop, open to adults and teens. The cost is $35, including all materials and supplies. Harding lives in Freeport and presents workshops in many areas of creative expression.

Felted Landscapes will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. Susan Perrine will provide instruction and materials to create a 10-inch one-of-a-kind felted image. In addition, the workshop will include a technique of stitching layers together between soluble paper, then immersing in water to dissolve the paper. The workshop is open to ages 12 through adult and is $40, including all materials and supplies. Perrine has exhibited her work around New England and shares her passion for textiles by offering workshops in weaving, most recently at the Common Ground Fair in Unity.

Advance registration is required by Oct. 8. For more information or to register, contact Robyn Holman, Atrium Art Gallery curator, at 753-6554 or [email protected]. The exhibit website is www.usm.maine.edu/lac/art
