LEWISTON — Major cycling events with thousands of riders highlight the Sunday schedule for The Dempsey Challenge.

Riders leave on the non-competitive,100-mile route through Androscoggin and Oxford counties at 7:30 a.m. They are followed by starts for 50-mile, 25-mile and 10-mile events.

In addition to the walk and run events of The Dempsey Challenge, there is a Festival in the Park for participants and the general public at Simard-Payne Police Memorial Park, Oxford Street, Lewiston, with a Health and Wellness Expo to provide information. The festival events include a KidZone, vendor fair, food court, a Dempsey Center tent and a Spirit of Hope tent.

There also is live entertainment at the Festival in the Park.

Rain earlier in the week left wet grass and some mud on the park grounds early Saturday morning, but sun and wind should provide some drying before today’s activities there.

The Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Walk takes place around the park at 3:30 p.m. today, with closing ceremonies to follow.

In addition to the 5K and 10K walk and run events Saturday morning, there was a survivor/caregiver event at The Public Theatre featuring Scott Burton, cancer survivor, comedian, author and juggler.

A Kid’s Fun Run took place while the older participants made the walk and run circuit of L-A streets.

The Dempsey Challenge is presented by Amgen, a maker of pharmaceuticals for major diseases. The Challenge is the principal fundraising platform for The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center. The Dempsey Center provides free support, education and wellness services to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers.

Organizers said sponsor contributions cover event costs and 100 percent of fundraising dollars directly benefits the Center.
