RANGELEY — Police caught a Rangeley woman purple-handed after they set up a sting operation using dye last month at the Red Onion Restaurant where things were going missing, police Chief Dennis Leahy said Monday.

Naomi J. Sutherland, 21, was charged on a misdemeanor charge of theft by unauthorized taking on Sept. 10, Leahy said. The investigation is ongoing, he said.

Franklin County Sheriff Detective Tom White and Leahy put invisible dye on money at about noon on Sept. 10. About 6 1/2 hours later, officer John Bonnell received a call that there was an employee who had fluorescent purple dye on her hands, Leahy said.

The officer talked to the employee, and she went out to her vehicle and the marked currency was returned, he said.
