GORHAM — Alix Vandeventer scored the opening goal as Bates cruised to a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in women’s soccer action Tuesday.
The Bobcats (3-4-1) posted their second goal when rookie Wally Pierce played a through ball to junior Courtney Talcott, who knocked a 12-yard shot past the Huskies’ (4-8) keeper, Katie Cobb.
The final marker came in the 71st minute when rookie Kara Stefaniak crossed the ball from the left end line and into the box.
Junior Annie Burns and rookie Anabel Schmelz combined for the shutout.

LEWISTON — The University of Southern Maine broke a scoreless tie in the 59th minute and added a second goal 20 minutes later for a 2-0 victory over Bates College in men’s soccer action Tuesday.
Senior midfielder Chris Kain netted his first goal of the season for the Huskies (3-7-1) with 31:42 left in the second half.
The Huskies got an insurance goal 20 minutes later, as senior forward Nick Johnson delivered a cross to open first-year midfielder Branden Lever of Auburn, who scored his first collegiate goal on a header inside the far right post.
Junior goalkeeper Greg Watts made four saves.
