DIXFIELD — A seventh-grade boy at Mountain Valley Middle School was expelled Monday night, following an hourlong closed session by the Western Foothills school board.
Superintendent Tom Ward said the expulsion was the result of an incident involving an unspecified weapon and an “altercation” at a Mountain Valley High School football game on Sept. 3. Ward said no one was injured during the incident, but police were called in.
The board voted 14-0 with two abstentions to expel the boy. Those abstaining were Tracey Higley and Denise Carrier, who both work in law enforcement. Representative Maida Demers-Dobson was absent.
Ward was directed to meet with the boy’s family to discuss their son’s needs and what he must do before being allowed to re-enter school. Some of the things that an expelled student normally is required to do include counseling sessions, community service and maintaining school work.
Ward said the expulsion was the first since the new district was formed in July 2009.
