NORWAY — A special town meeting will be held Thursday on a zoning change that would allow the Gingerbread House to be moved down Main Street.

Voters will also be asked to discontinue winter maintenance on Damon Road.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the municipal building on Danforth Street.

Town officials learned last month that the town’s shoreland zoning ordinance necessitates a 40,000-square-foot lot for the Gingerbread House, not the 10,000 square feet stipulated in the building code and the comprehensive plan.

The large historic home has been in disrepair for years and its owner offered it to a community group if it was moved from near the Advertiser-Democrat. The group plans to have it relocated farther up Main Street on a lot that’s about 11,000 to 12,000 square feet.

The building can be moved there only if voters agree to change the shoreland zoning for that site to allow a 10,000-square-foot lot.

The 1851 Evans-Cummings House, known for its “gingerbread” trim, is expected to be moved this fall if voters approve the zoning change.

Voters will also be asked to close Damon Road to winter maintenance because the only resident on it, Robert Sallies, is not there in the winter. Sallies said he will not ask for compensation.
