AUBURN — Library officials are hoping to encourage early literacy among prereaders by offering a special library card.

“We know how important early reading is for young children,” Auburn Library Director Lynn Lockwood said. “There is tons of research, just reams of studies, that show that reading to a young child helps them learn later on. We’re trying to make parents and caregivers see how important that can be.”

The new “My First Library Card” will be available to any child kindergarten-age or younger.

“When they reach second grade, they can qualify for the regular, adult library card,” Lockwood said. “All of our second-grade students have a field trip to the library and they can get their permanent cards then.”

The card was designed by Auburn Library board member Jeff Soifer. Applications will be given to kindergartners at a November school event, but parents need to come in to either library to get the cards.

“We need someone responsible to sign something,” Lockwood said. They may call the Auburn Library at 333-6640 for more information.

Jim Wilkins, development director at the library, said the program is being supported by donations from the Auburn-Lewiston Rotary Breakfast Club and the United Way of Androscoggin. The Rotary has donated $1,000 and the United Way $500.
