Unfortunately, some people consider it acceptable to openly attack the president and the federal government. That is certainly not appropriate, particularly in these tough economic times. The federal government is a major revenue source for many of the state’s basic services — education, health care, veterans’ benefits, job training/retraining, road construction, etc.

We must have someone here in Maine, such as Libby Mitchell, who is already fully aware of our state’s needs and fully knowledgeable about how to access federal funds to meet those needs.

It is equally important that we have someone representing us in Washington, such as Mike Michaud, who has already demonstrated his ability to advocate for Maine and successfully channel needed resources into our state.

Now is not the time for negativism, open hostility, or on-the-job-training. Now is the time for experienced and effective leaders such as Libby Mitchell and Mike Michaud.

Elaine Makas, Lewiston

Androscoggin County commissioner
