George Hewison of East Auburn has been appointed a game warden and took his oath of office yesterday morning. He will see to it that both the fish and game laws are enforced on and about Lake Auburn.

50 years ago, 1960

Auburn Fire Chief J. Coleman Miller said last night that he is going to call for compliance with state law involving use of glass jugs as containers for gasoline.

Miller said he had observed some Auburn filling stations still are pumping gasoline into glass jugs which are transported away from the station in automobiles.

Miller pointed out the danger of this practice, especially the danger involved from gasoline being transported in glass containers in case of an accident.

25 years ago, 1985

Lewiston firefighters donned protective gear and breathing apparatus to extinguish a smoky chemical fire at Camden Yarns, on Beech Street, Thursday afternoon. The fire was confined to a 55-gallon drum of sodium-chloride compound, Deputy Chief Richard Guay said Thursday night. He said the fire was quickly brought under control, and firefighters took the drum outside the building to completely extinguish it.
