AUBURN — More than 1,200 walkers stepped out on Sept. 19 to raise funds and awareness to help prevent Maine’s leading health threat – cardiovascular disease – at the Central Maine Heart Walk.
Walkers gathered at the American Heart Association event at the Hilton Garden Inn to hear from speakers, participate in health screenings and meet other families impacted by heart disease and stroke. Two participants, Roland Bernier and Robyn Petrich, were honored with the AHA’s Lifestyle Change Award.
Bernier was nominated by Sue Driscoll at Central Maine Medical Center for his healthy lifestyle changes and willingness to support other heart patients as a volunteer for the Mended Hearts program. Petrich was nominated by her manager at TD Bank, Paul Smith, for losing more than 70 pounds and quitting smoking.
Satellite walks were also held in Rumford, Bridgton and Brunswick on the same day. The events together raised over $120,000 to fund the American Heart Association’s research and education. Donations are still being accepted at www.centralmaineheartwalk.org or by calling 800-937-0944.
