DEAR SUN SPOTS: Do you know how to sew and want to make a difference? The Sew Fabulous! 4-H Sewing Club at Hillview Housing Development is looking for committed volunteers who know how to sew.

Our established program, held in collaboration with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, has about 20 participants who are learning how to sew, but our girls need more mentorship and one-on-one help.

We meet twice a month on alternating Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering, please call 783-8539 or e-mail khughes@lewistonhousing.org for more details. Thank you! — Katie Hughes, aspirations coordinator, AmeriCorps*VISTA

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Family and friends are organizing a benefit spaghetti dinner to help Ray Fleury rebuild his barn, lost to fire on Sept. 2.

The early 1800s barn was destroyed, severely limiting Ray’s ability to continue the family farming business he ran from his home of 10 years. The farm produced eggs, milk, butter, beef and vegetables for local and CSA sales.

“Everything was affected by the equipment loss,” Ray said, as he spoke of what he can continue to produce now and his future plans for rebuilding.

Ray found the perfect “job” for himself by combining a part-time position at Washburn Norlands Living History Center as the historic farmer with his family business in Jay. Farming is his passion whether using historic or contemporary techniques.

Join us on Oct. 16 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the AmVets, Post 33, 111 Main St., Jay. A sumptuous meal and raffle items of all varieties will be available as a means to support Ray, our “local farmer” in his recovery and rebuilding efforts.

Tickets are available by advance sales. Contact AmVets, 897-4112; Marie, 320-2116, Lori Anne, 712-8117; or Nancey, 740-0777.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I just read your Oct. 8 column in which you say you don’t know of any stamp collectors in the area.

I don’t know what happened to your records, but my name had been on file with you for many years.

I am now retired, but was a stamp dealer for 29 years. I still collect, buy and sell on occasion.

It is very true that prices have declined, but in today’s economy values of every collectible have been affected. — Julien Gosselin, 784-7892, jgosselin91948@roadrunner.com

ANSWER: Sun Spots is sorry she didn’t have you in her records. She has to admit that there has been more than one Sun Spots in the last 29 years!

An almost identical request ran several months ago, and no one responded. But from this point on, you can be sure your name will be at the top of the list.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: My children (Grace, 10, and Joey, 7) and I are making crafts to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of New England. If anyone has any Makit & Bakit crystals that they would like to donate, we would really appreciate it.

Crystals may be mailed to me at Geiger Elementary School, 601 College St., Lewiston, ME 04240 or dropped at the school’s front office. Thank you for your help. — Amy Pelletier Banks, abanks@lewistonpublicschools.org
