LEWISTON — The newest exhibit at L/A Arts’ Gallery 5, titled “Plein Air! Works Painted on Location,” features 40 works depicting Maine landscapes.

An opening reception for the guest exhibit, done in association with the newly formed Western Chapter of Plein Air Painters of Maine, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15.

Paintings vary in medium, locations and styles, from realistic to impressionistic and literal to moody. Some are completed in one day while others are taken back to location for multiple sessions.

” ‘Plein Air!’ is a great exhibit to see the Maine landscape portrayed by local Maine artists. You’ll see some recognizable locations, as well as interpretations not ever exhibited before,” said Michael Ranucci, Plein Air Painters of Maine Western Chapter liaison.

“Plein air painting is an important practice for many artists as they represent, and paint directly, from nature,” he said. “The paintings tend to be fresh, with an immediacy that captures a feeling of location.”

Participating artists are Stephanie Berry, Clara Bolduc, Joyce Coyne, Anastasia Gatto, Scott Hunter, Dacia Klinkerch, Ian Orman, Patricia Powers, Michael Ranucci, Susan Roux, Lawrence Stevens, Catherine St. Pierre, Nancy Trider and Cornelia Walworth. Many will attend the reception, which is free of charge.

The exhibit will be up through Nov. 6. There will be an accompanying artists talk with Coyne, Gatto and Hunter on Friday, Oct. 2, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Gallery hours for “Plein Air! Works Painted on Location” are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Gallery 5 is at 49 Lisbon St. For more information, call 782-7228.
