AUBURN — The Auburn-Lewiston YWCA recently purchased two pink treadmills and for every mile logged on the treadmills during October, the manufacturer, Cybex International Inc., will pay 10 cents to support breast cancer research.

“The Y recognizes that breast cancer is the number two cause of cancer death in U.S. women,” said Wellness Director Tish Caldwell. “We want to be part of the national effort to find a cure, for our members who are women and for women everywhere. When Cybex offered us the opportunity to join the partnership with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, we enthusiastically accepted. We think members will choose to work out on the pink treadmill for their October workouts because they realize that every mile is one step closer to a cure.”

The YMCA will also offer a treadmill marathon and a yoga and pilates workshop in support of breast cancer awareness and research.

The marathon will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18. There will be a sign-up sheet in the lobby where people can sign on to walk, jog or run on one of the pink treadmills.

The yoga and pilates workshop will take place Monday, Oct. 25. The workshop will focus on the exercises to help rehab and strengthen areas affected by breast cancer treatment. A meditation section will also be done. The workshop is free, but donations will be accepted for Pink Pride, the YMCA’s team under the Susan Komen Foundation.
