HIRAM — A Parsonsfield man was arrested Sunday afternoon after a stray bullet grazed the head of a neighborhood woman near where he was target shooting.

Sean McNulty, 20, was charged with reckless conduct with a firearm in Hiram by the Maine State Police. Yvonne Dorrity, 76, suffered minor injuries after the bullet grazed her head head just above the eyes. She was treated at the scene and did not require transport to the hospital, according to authorities.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the state police, said that the incident occurred at about 11 a.m. when McNulty was shooting at milk jugs on the banks of a sand pit located across the street from Dorrity’s Pilgram Drive home. He said the sand pit at the corner of South Hiram and New Settlement roads has long been used as a place to go for target practice.

McCausland said that McNulty was shooting a Winchester hunting rifle at gallon milk jugs filled with water. He said that one of the bullets ricocheted off one of the jugs and traveled another 350 feet before hitting Dorrity.

While McNulty did not fire any more rounds following all the commotion, McCausland said he was still responsible and supposed to take caution because of the residences near the sand pit.

“The obligation of anyone who shoots a gun is to fire it in a safe manner,” McCausland said. “He didn’t mean to strike the woman, but he’s in a location where houses are now located.”
