LEWISTON — “Monsieur Le Candidat,” an exhibit in the University of Southern Maine’s “Franco-American Collection,” showcases individuals who have been involved in politics at the local, state and national levels.
On display will be a desk from the State House, other objects donated by state legislators and campaign materials from years gone by.
Visitors can learn the stories of Franco politicians, from Alonzo Garcelon, a descendent of French immigrants who oversaw one of Maine’s most disputed elections in 1880, to Georgette Berube, who served as a state representative and senator from the 1970s to the 1990s.
The “Franco-American Collection” also houses a number of theses on Maine politics and several photos of past state legislatures and city councils.
One of the largest repositories of Franco-American archival material in the state, the collection covers local history, government, religion, language, education, industry, sports and the arts. It is at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn campus, 51 Westminster St.
The exhibit will be up until early November. Viewing hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For more information, call 753-6545. or visit ww.usm.maine.edu/lac/franco/.
