FARMINGTON — In conjunction with Pastoral Care Week, the Franklin Memorial Hospital board of chaplains will offer a workshop titled, “A Team Approach to Palliative Care in the Inpatient Setting: A Chaplain’s Perspective” featuring the Rev. Dr. Douglas Dunlap, from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, in the Chisholm Room. The workshop is free an open to all.

Palliative care is an approach which improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing life-threatening illness, through the prevention, assessment and treatment of pain and other physical, psychosocial and spiritual problems. It is appropriate for people of any age and at any point in an illness.

In the presentation, Dunlap will describe the multidisciplinary composition of the palliative care service; the interface of palliative care with other medical center units and services; the nature of palliative care ranging from medication management, to the use of music, journaling and art; family support services; and family and patient decision-making paradigms. Pediatric and adult case examples will be cited and there will be opportunities for discussion.

Dunlap is a member of the hospital board of chaplains and has been a volunteer chaplain at Franklin Memorial Hospital since 1997. In 2009, he was engaged in a residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center where he served as a chaplain member of the palliative care medicine service. He was also assigned to hematology/oncology services, serving patients, family members of patients and members of the staff.
