PERU — A 2007 graduate of Dirigo High School is getting a chance to learn about politics, social matters and issues facing Maine people as an intern for U.S. Rep. Michael Michaud’s Lewiston and Bangor offices.
Heather Stone, 21, of Peru is in year four of a five-year master’s program in business and paralegal studies at Husson University. She began her internship about three weeks ago.
“It’s really exciting and a lot of fun,” she said. “I like to follow politics but never thought I’d get behind the scene.”
She said she’s learning a lot.
“People are concerned about topics I never knew existed, such as immigrants in northern Maine, health care and different laws,” she said.
Stone, a dean’s list student, is the daughter of Angela and Michael Barkhouse of Peru, and Lincoln Stone of Dixfield.
In addition to taking a full load of courses and working several hours a week in Michaud’s Bangor and Lewiston offices, Stone works part time at Growing Opportunities in South Paris and Acadia Hospital in Bangor. She also has earned her pharmacy technician license and volunteers for Charities of Maine where she helps two elderly people by taking them shopping, keeping them company and assisting them in their homes.
Stone, who earned a semester’s worth of college credits in high school, hopes her degree will provide the credentials needed to work in a large business or law firm.
