DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Knights of Columbus of Androscoggin and Oxford counties are announcing their second annual Knights Before Christmas Toy Drive for children in foster care.

We will have our first fill-the-truck event at the Gridiron Sports Bar on Nov. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by one at different locations every weekend through Dec. 4.

Every year, hundreds of children are affected by circumstances beyond their control. They are often brought from abusive, neglectful homes and placed with “angel families.” These families open their homes, lives and their hearts to these children to offer them a home but also to show them love.

Oftentimes, these children leave with nothing but the clothes on their backs. We ask that you open your hearts and reflect on Christmases past. Remember the joys you had as you looked upon your gifts and the smiles on the faces of your families. With your support, these children can have the same.

Please remember these innocent victims by donating a new unwrapped toy or gift card. No gift is too small. Donations of any kind will be gladly accepted.

We wish to thank all your readers for their kindness and generosity last year and hope they will be there to help us again this year.

I’m sure we are all aware that the YWCA is in need of help. On Saturday, Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Lewiston-Auburn time Bank will be doing a day of sharing. On this day we’ll be doing some cleaning, painting and getting the YWCA ready for winter.

For more information, please call me at 576-0964. Thank you. — Sharon Carter, Time Bank coordinator

ANSWER: For those who many not know, the Time Bank is an organization where members trade their labors for the labors of others, on an equal hour-to-hour basis. For example, you might offer piano lessons to those in the Time Bank. Then, when you need help with something, say moving, Time Bank volunteers help you.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Please let your readers know that the Women’s Hospital Association of Central Maine Medical Center is hosting an art show on Nov. 6 at the hospital atrium from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with free admission.

There will be more than 27 artists at the show and a highlight of the show is the raffle of an original water color entitled “Picking Time” by local artist Irene Duplissis.

Tickets for the raffle are on sale at the WHA Gift Shop. The Bennett Breast Care Center will receive all monies raised.

Your readers can call me at 783-6651 for details on being a patron and viewing the art early. Thanks, Sun Spots! — Mary Ann Norcros, norc@gwi.net

NOTE TO READERS: Sun Spots has dozens of letters waiting to appear in the column, so if you have not seen yours, don’t despair. It will appear eventually. Sun Spots tries to run those items about upcoming events in a timely manner, but you must get them to her in plenty of time. If you send a letter via U.S. mail, you need to send it at least two weeks before, as she only picks up her mail once a week. Those with e-mail should give at least a week’s notice. Thank you for your patience.

This column is for you, our readers. It is for your questions and comments. There are only two rules: You must write to the column and sign your name (we won’t use it if you ask us not to). Please include your phone number. Letters will not be returned or answered by mail, and telephone calls will not be accepted. Your letters will appear as quickly as space allows. Address them to Sun Spots, P.O. Box 4400, Lewiston, ME 04243-4400. Inquiries can also be e-mailed to sunspots@sunjournal.com.
