KINGSTON, R.I. — Warren Smith threw for a touchdown and ran for another as Maine defeated Rhode Island 28-23 in Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday.

After falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter, Smith completed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Pushaun Brown and ran for a 3-yard score to put the Black Bears (3-5, 2-3) in front 14-7 at halftime.

Terrel Walker ran for an 86-yard score in the third quarter to extend Maine’s lead to 21-10.

The Rams (2-5, 1-3) then scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Steve Probst to Ramadan Abdullah with 10 seconds left in the quarter as Rhode Island trailed 21-17 heading into the fourth quarter.

Brown scored on a 2-yard run to put the Black Bears back in front 28-17 before Rhode Island running back Anthony Ferrer ran for a 17-yard touchdown to make the score 28-23 after a failed two-point conversion.
