LEWISTON — Ben DeTroy will host a bluegrass jam with area musicians the last Thursday of the month throughout winter at She Doesn’t Like Guthries. The first installment will be on Oct. 28, beginning at 6 p.m.

On Friday, Oct. 29, Luna Madidus, a modern jazz ensemble, will perform mostly original compositions, modern jazz standards and its unique arrangements of music spanning from 19th century German art song to David Bowie.

For the Friday performance, Luna Madidus will present the premiere of “Jazz Quintet, Bad End Met,” a work based on “The Gashlycrumb Tinies,” by Edward Gorey.

“The Gashlycrumb Tinies” is a book, first published in 1963, that tells the tale of 26 children (each representing a letter of the alphabet) and their untimely deaths in rhyming dactylic couplets. The book includes black-and-white illustrations by Gorey.

Making up Luna Madidus are Jason Dean on drums; Mike Whitehead, trumpet; Doug Kennedy, bass; Kristen Birkholder, vocals; and Tom Luther, piano.

The show will begin at 9 p.m. No cover. Guthries is at 115 Middle St. For more information, call 376-3344.
