Sugarloaf Ambulance / Rescue Vehicles, was established in the early 1970s in Carrabassett Valley by Ron Morin, who also owned Sugarloaf Ambulance / Rescue. The ambulance service was founded out of the need to have an ambulance, but unable to afford a commercial manufactured ambulance. Morin built ambulances from Chevy and Ford Cube vans, commonly designed for delivery trucks.
Morin has been designing and building emergency vehicles for more than 35 years and served as chair of the state of Maine’s Committee for Ambulance Design Criteria.
Morin is a paramedic, from the original class of 1982. Ron served as a member of the state of Maine EMS Board and was the founder of the Maine EMS Honor Guard / Color Guard. He has served as an instructor in Emergency Vehicle Operators Course, basic and advanced, Advanced Extrication Instructor, Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support instructor, Emergency Medical Dispatch instructor, Mass Casualty Incidents instructor, and was awarded “Maine EMS Instructor of the Year” in 1990. In 1997, Morin received a “Systems Excellence” award from Maine EMS for ongoing support of Maine EMS systems. In 2008, Morin was inducted into The Maine EMS Hall of Fame.
The fire service is also familiar with Morin, who served as the Chief of the Carrabassett Valley, Maine Fire Department for 17 years. With these credentials, Sugarloaf Ambulance / Rescue Vehicles has the knowledge and skills to design a vehicle to meet the customers’ needs and expectations.
In 1990, Morin became a representative to P. L. Custom Emergency Vehicles. Recognizing its superior quality and custom capability, Morin continues to specify and design, while P. L. Custom does the manufacturing.
In 1996, Sugarloaf Ambulance / Rescue Vehicles became a licensed Maine New Car Dealer, operating in the garage at 1004 Poplar Stream Road. Also that year, Morin was awarded “P. L. Custom Salesman of the Year.” In 1997, 1998, and 1999, he was awarded “P. L. Custom Dealer of the Year.” Again in 2000, 2005, 2006, and 2009, Morin was presented “Salesman of The Year.” In the past 12 years, has been a member of the Presidents Club of P. L. Custom, exceeding $1,000,000 in annual sales of P. L. product. In 2006, he again became Dealer of the Year and Salesman of the Year.
In January 2004, the facility was opened at 411 U.S. Route 2 East, in Wilton, Maine. With employees Jason Davis and Justin Davis, from the Farmington area, it became more convenient to have the main base of business in the area. Located in Wilton and Carrabassett Valley, Sugarloaf Ambulance / Rescue Vehicles has been designated an authorized P. L. Custom Service Center. Morin and the two Davises are very familiar with emergency vehicle construction and design and provide mobile service, in the customers’ station as well as arrange authorized warranty chassis service. Roxanne Davis is employed part-time, providing administrative functions.
The product line includes ambulances, heavy rescue vehicles, chiefs vehicles, EMS paramedic response vehicles, and wheelchair vans. In the past 20 years, the company has delivered more than 300 P. L. Custom Ambulances in the state of Maine and more than 50 in New Hampshire.
In the state of Maine, Sugarloaf Ambulance / Rescue Vehicles has Heavy Rescue 1 vehicles in Windham, Scarborough, the Presumpscot Valley Hazardous Materials Team, Falmouth, Portland, Biddeford, Auburn, Wiscasset and Bangor. They have light Rescue 1 vehicles in Mechanic Falls, Topsham, Fryeburg, and New Sharon.
Several years ago, the company became a member of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce. While Sugarloaf Ambulance / Rescue Vehicles markets their product to specific customers, they see the FCCOC as a major networking opportunity with the people who mean the most, the people of our community. Supporting the Wilton Blueberry Festival and the End of Summer Hoorah are important events to Sugarloaf Ambulance / Rescue Vehicles, as they recognize the outstanding work provided by staff and members of the FCCOC to keep the community spirit alive.
