DEAR SUN SPOTS: Are there any furniture upholsterers within a 30-mile radius of Lewiston-Auburn? Those that are listed in telephone directory don’t respond to messages left or the telephones are no longer in service. — Pat, Greene

ANSWER: Sun Spots has discovered that Decorating Plus has moved to Gray. However, they still have an Auburn phone number (784-0173) that is forwarded to their number in Gray (657-8103) or to owner Lynn’s cell phone. She said she can help with all aspects of decorating, including upholstery and window treatments.

Sun Spots also found Maine Stitch Upholstery, 40 York St., Bath, ME 04530, 729-4612.

Lastly, Leo’s Custom Auto Upholstery, 28 Riverside Drive, Auburn, 782-3822, offers limited furniture upholstery during the winter months. He won’t do entire living room sets, but will take on an antique chair, recliner or other similar project.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: If there is anyone locally who knows the craft of traditional Maine double-knit mittens, I would love to hear from you.

I have two books on the subject: “Fox and Geese and Fences, A Collection of Traditional Maine Mittens” by Robin Hansen and “Flying Geese and Partridge Feet, More Mittens from Up North and Down East” by Robin Hansen with Janetta Dexter.

They include good instructions, but I’m having difficulty with them. If anyone knows this craft and can help me, please contact me. — Nancy Reynolds, nan_5rey@yahoo.com, 782-7781
