JAY – High school students voted 95-79 in a mock election Thursday to approve school consolidation with RSU 36 in Livermore and Livermore Falls, teacher Mike Simoneau said.
Voters in the three towns will decide Tuesday, Jan. 25, if they want to merge the two systems.
Simoneau’s Maine history class at Jay High School ran off the ballots, which also included state elections. There were enough ballots for 226 students but not all chose to participate.
The results showed mixed reactions to consolidation.
“I don’t like the idea,” junior Kristy Macomber said. “I think because we are two schools and we’re both rivals that we’re better off staying the like we are.”
Junior Haleigh O’Donnell had the opposite opinion.
“I think we should consolidate because of our sports teams,” O’Donnell said. “They are really going downhill because there are not enough athletes to participate.”
With the schools systems combined, the teams would be stronger, she said.
