AUBURN — John M. Enman Jr., 81, of Avon, died suddenly at his home, Monday, Nov. 1.
He was born on May 15, 1929, in Jefferson, N.H., a son of John M. and Maude (Woodard) Enman Sr. of Canton.
In 1954, he married Betty Ruth Porter of Peru. They made their home in Canton and Avon, where they raised four children.
John had a very strong work ethic and was truly a “jack-of-all-trades” and “master of many.” He could fix anything and if he couldn’t find a part or a tool he would often manufacture what he needed.
He started his career working on his father’s farm at a very young age and also worked with him as a finish carpenter. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and a mechanic for his father-in-law, Waldo Porter in Peru before moving to Avon, where he worked for many years for Ernest Pinkham Logging, Rowes Garage, Bucky’s Garage and for himself with his son, John Enman III in the woods. He plowed roads for the town of Avon and finished his working career with GAC Logging in Avon. He kept very busy in his retirement tinkering in his garage for family and friends.
John is survived by his children, Ruth Jackson of Lewiston, Shirley Johnstone and her husband, Brad Jr., of Raymond, Philip Enman and his partner, Patty Knox, of Farmington and John Enman III and his partner, Diane Pearson, of Phillips; several grandchildren, Tony Howard of Greene, Tammie and Randy Packard of Belgrade, Brad and Michelle Johnstone III of North Waterboro, Zachary and Jamie Enman of California, Kim Knox and her partner, Jim, of Farmington, Sophie and Kelsey Enman of Massachusetts, and Emma and Elijah Enman of Rangeley; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Randall Enman of Dixfield; and a sister, Edith Pettengill of Canton.
He was predeceased by his wife, Betty on July 20, 2008; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Johnstone.
Words of condolence and tribute may be shared with his family at www.wilesrc.com.
