RUMFORD — Mountain Valley got off to a fast start and never took its foot off the pedal in a Class B semifinal football game against Falmouth on Friday night.
Taylor Bradley gained 202 yards and scored five touchdowns, and the defense stiffened when necessary in a 43-6 win over the Yachtsmen before a huge crowd at Chet Bulger Field.
Josh Allen scored four touchdowns in a convincing 38-0 win over Falmouth last month.
No. 1 Mountain Valley (10-0) used the wildcat formation — direct snaps early and often for big gains.
“Our kids play their hearts out,” Mountain Valley coach Jim Aylward. “We know we stole one from Wells (13-6), and we’ll be in for a snort knocker next week.”
Mountain Valley will host Wells in the regional championship game next Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
Bradley proved to be simply unstoppable by rushing for three scores, catching a TD pass and returning a kickoff 80 yards for good measure. The senior had over 300 all-purpose yards and now has 1,022 rushing yards this season. He had ran back a punt for a TD that was negated by a penalty.
“The wildcat formation was working,”Bradley said. “Our guard (Ryan Glover) was kicking out and Falmouth was pushing up on the line. We worked hard on blocking in practice, even in the rain”
The Falcons scored on five of their six possessions in the first half and had taken an 18-0 lead in the first quarter. Following a three and out, Mountain Valley scored in three plays, with Bradley scoring on a 6-yard run. Cam Kaubris (3 of 5 for 84 yards) threw a pair of touchdown passes to Josh Allen and Bradley for 20 and 24 yards, respectively. Mountain Valley gained 351 yards, largely behind the offensive line, which is comprised of tackles Tyler Morton and Isaac Ledesma, guards Glover and Rashad Lavoie and center Nate Nicols.
“The fast start definitely helped,” Glover said. “Once we get the momentum, we are hard to stop. During the game, everybody knew that we needed to get it done or else there would be no football for us next week.”
Falmouth came to life after quarterback Zack Alexander (4 o 15 for 44 yards) directed a 77-yard drive, ending with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Ryan McDonald. The drive featured a double reverse, but Alexander wasn’t able to get set in the pocket against a swarming pass rush. The Yachtsmen’s top receiver Jack Cooleen only caught two passes. The Mountain Valley defense was led by Taylor Carey, Tyler Morton, Glover, Matt Hosie, Allen, Izzak Mills, Christian Durland and Ben Higley.
“The coaches said to follow the fullback and tailback,” Glover said. “They will take us to the play.”
Bradley took the wind out of Falmouth’s sails by returning the kickoff down the left side for a TD. Mountain Valley led 24-6 and on the ensuing kickoff the hard-hitting special teams forced its second fumble. Ryan Nicols recovered and Tyler Mason scored on a 9-yard run. Bradley added a 4-yard touchdown for a 37-6 lead at halftime.
Falmouth gained eight rushing yards and ran six plays in the second half. Bradley scored on the initial drive of the third quarter.
