BRUNSWICK — A 27-yard field goal attempt by Gavin Segall-Abramshit the upright with 51 seconds remaining to hand Bowdoin College a 21-20 victory over Bates in a CBB matchup Saturday afternoon.

Turnovers doomed the Bobcats (1-6) again this week, as the Polar Bears (2-5) were able to cash in for 15 points on three Bates miscues.

Bates led 14-12 at halftime.

Bates finished with 176 yards rushing as seven different players carried the ball. Jared Jammal recorded 56 yards and Ryan Curit another 47 yards. Pat Quinn made five solo tackles and had a pair of interceptions for Bates.

Brendan Garner finsihed an outstanding day with six catches for 114 yards and two touchdown catches.

Colby 42, Tufts 41

MEDFORD, Mass. — Quarterback Nick Kmetz hit tight end Spencer Merwin with no time left on the clock to tie the game at 41-41, and kicker David Bendit withstood three straight Tufts timeouts before kicking the game-winning point as Colby clipped Tufts 42-41 in football action Saturday.

The Mules (4-3) scored two touchdowns in the final 5:20 of play to pull out the exciting win. Kmetz tossed a 16-yard pass to Nat Carson to close the gap to 41-35, before connecting with Merwin on the one-yard pass as time ran out.

Kmetz broke records for most total offense in a game, most passes completed in a game and most passes attempted for the Mules. The junior quarterback had 473 total yards and completed 40-of-53 passes.

Maine Maritime 63, Cost Guard 47

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Maine Maritime rushed for 619 yards, led by senior Jim Bower with 218 yards and four touchdowns, as the Mariners coasted to a 63-47 victory over Coast Guard in NEFC football action Saturday.

Bower, who is third nationally with an average of 164.5 rushing yards per game, moved into seventh place on the all-time Division III rushing list as he finished the game with 5,672 career rushing yards.

Juior quarterback Matt Rende carried 22 times for 185 yards and a score while junior Nick Bourassa had 11 carries for 125 yards and a touchdown. Rende was also one for three for nine yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Becker 27, Husson 23

LEICESTER, Mass. — Thomas Pearson capped off a 14-play drive with a two-yard touchdown run to lift Becker College to a 27-23 triumph over Husson.

Pearson led the Becker (2-8) rushing attack with 59 yards and two touchdowns. Curtis Ludden rushed for 102 yards, including 60 on the Hawks’ game-winning drive.

Justine Lindie carried the Eagles’ (1-9) offense with 151 yards on 33 carries. Ernest Wiggins made 10 tackles , including to tackles for a loss.

UMass 39, Miane 24

AMHERST, Mass. — Tyler Holmes became the first player in Massachusetts history to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game in a 39-24 win over Maine on Saturday.

Holmes scored on returns of 18 and 50 yards for UMass (6-3, 4-2 Colonial Athletic Association), which forced a total of four Maine turnovers.

Minutemen quarterback Kyle Havens completed 22 of 28 passes for 213 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. Ryan Carter started the scoring for the Minutemen with a 97-yard kickoff return on a reverse to open the game.

UMass built a 32-10 halftime lead as Havens threw three touchdown passes to culminate drives of more than 70 yards each. Dan Sheeran, Julian Talley and Jonathan Hernandez each caught a touchdown pass.

Warren Smith was intercepted three times but completed 29 of 41 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns for Maine (3-6, 2-4).
