SKOWHEGAN (AP) — The owners of an old county jail in Maine are turning it into a home for a farmer’s market, a grist mill and a knitting and fiber store.
The project involves transforming the old Somerset County Jail in Skowhegan. The 14,000 square-foot brick and stone house, which was built in 1897, was shut down in 2008 when a new jail opened.
Main Street Skowhegan Executive Director Jennifer Olsen tells WCSH-TV the project will fit in nicely with the revitalization of the downtown area.
Owner Amber Lambke says it’s hoped that the knitting store will be open for the holidays and the mill be running by harvest-time next year.
