PARIS — An 8-year-old boy was taken by medical helicopter to a Portland hospital after an unoccupied pickup his father was working on knocked him down and ran him over Sunday morning.
Lt. Michael Dailey of the Paris Police Department said that the accident occurred about 10:30 a.m. Sunday at a home on Christian Ridge Road in South Paris. The boy, whose name was not released, was standing behind the full-size Ford pickup that his dad had just taken down off a pair of ramps when the unoccupied vehicle started to roll backwards.
Dailey said that he was not sure whether the vehicle was a standard or automatic transmission or why it started to roll. The truck, which has dual-tires on the rear axle, knocked the child down and then rolled over him, causing injuries to his head and hand.
Dailey said that the boy went by ambulance to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway before LifeFlight moved him to Maine Medical Center in Portland. He said that the boy was conscious when police arrived on the scene.
No charges are being filed, Dailey said, adding that the incident was ruled an accident.
