LEWISTON — Hammond Lumber Co., headquartered in Belgrade, has purchased the assets of the former Pineland Lumber Co. of Lewiston.

Under the arrangement, Pineland President Neal Ouellette and co-owner Ruth Gallagher will assume working positions at Hammond, and all former Pineland workers will be offered positions with Hammond, according to a statement from the company Tuesday afternoon.

Hammond currently owns and operates nine retail stores, including one at 282 Poland Road in Auburn, three miles from the Pineland Lumber facility at 10 Avon St. in Lewiston.

“Aside from thanking all of our loyal customers,” Ouellette said in the statement, “we would like to remind people of the importance of supporting locally owned businesses who are invested in this community.”

Hammond, which was founded in 1953, opened its Auburn branch more than 20 years ago. It is now the only locally owned independent lumber dealer in the greater Lewiston-Auburn area.

Pineland was founded in 1912.
