LEWISTON — The contents of the former St. Joseph’s School will be for sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4.

The surplus sale includes classroom and office furniture, commercial kitchen equipment, books, science lab equipment, knick-knacks, craft supplies, home-made crafts, art prints, and religious and historic school memorabilia. Proceeds will go to St. Dominic Academy.

While preparing for the sale, St. Dominic Academy parent volunteer Marie Abisalih looked through old photographs from St. Joseph’s School and became nostalgic.

Abisalih, of Auburn, grew up in Lewiston and attended St. Peter’s School. Her son, now a St. Dominic Academy eighth-grader, attended St. Joseph’s. “When I checked out St. Joseph’s in 2002, I was very impressed with how clean and personal it was,” said Abisalih.

Four years ago, the three Auburn and Lewiston Catholic elementary schools merged into one: Trinity Catholic Schools. This year, consolidation has resulted in grades prekindergarten through 12 becoming St. Dominic Academy.

The Friends of St. Dominic Academy, the school’s parent-teacher-alumni activity and fundraising group, are looking to the future. “This year has been the smoothest transition yet,” said parent volunteer Emily Tuttle, whose children started at St. Peter and Paul School in Auburn. “The St. Dominic Academy leadership has been positive, caring and optimistic.”

Saturday’s sale will give area residents a chance to purchase a part of local history, to purchase items for their homes, businesses or even for other schools and churches in need of supplies and equipment.

Parking is available behind the school building. Shoppers can enter through the back parking lot doors or through the Main Street front entrance.
