STRONG — The Maine Department of Transportation says the section of Route 145 in front of the elementary school is unquestionably a “no parking” zone and the town will not need an ordinance to enforce the law.

Selectmen had called a special meeting Tuesday night, planning to draft a rule that would allow them to request law enforcement assistance, but an MDOT representative surveyed the area that afternoon and pointed out that the state has jurisdiction.

Gene Uhuad, a western region traffic engineer, said the state DOT, and not the town, had authority to restrict parking on both sides of the street. He said the state will add another speed limit warning sign, and an existing sign will be repositioned for better visibility.

“This designation will help the town in requesting support from law enforcement agencies in preventing on-street parking, which is critical in ensuring the safety of all pedestrians and vehicular traffic during school hours, as well as during special events,” he said.

Maine State Trooper Aaron Turcotte agreed.

“Obviously, the main concern from everyone, including the State Police, is the safety of the children coming and going from the school,” he said.

Drivers also must obey speed limits when driving through a school zone, Turcotte said.

“Motorists need to remember is to slow down through school zones,” he said.

“In Strong, the school zone would be considered 300 feet prior to both the entrance and exit ways to the school.”

Troopers will increase their presence in these areas during drop-off and pick-up times to remind motorists to slow down and watch for children, he said.

“I do believe the town, the school and MDOT will all work in cooperation to keep this school zone safe,” he said.

Local resident Sheila Fay had asked selectmen at last week’s meeting to address the safety and speed issues. Principal Felecia Pease will remind parents to park behind the school or in another safe and legal spot.

People should call the Sheriff Department’s non-emergency number, 778-2680, or the Maine State Police’s non-emergency number, 624-7076, to report problems.
