BYRON — The Byron Fire Department is history.

Residents voted 22-0 Wednesday night to dissolve the department following a 75-minute discussion at the Coos Canyon School House.

Selectmen will now decide whether to contract the services with the Mexico or nearby Roxbury fire departments when they meet with the boards of selectmen of each town. Dates for those meetings have not been set.

The major reason given for dissolving the department is the great amount of regulations and trainings that are required by the state. The town of Byron has a population of about 120 people.

Also, the town will have to decide what to do with the new fire engine it received through a Homeland Security grant five years ago. Right now the engine is locked in the fire barn because no one is certified to drive it or to use it.

Among the possibilities is giving the truck to the Mexico Fire Department in return for providing fire coverage. That will be determined by selectmen from Bryon, Roxbury and Mexico when they negotiate a contract.
