NEWRY — The Phoenix House and Well will hold an opening reception for its exhibit, “Over the River and through the Woods: Maine Views at The Phoenix House and Well,” on Saturday, Dec. 18.

Featured will be paintings, prints and photographs done by Barbara Traficonte, Suzanne Hardy, Ron Hamilton, Irina Kahn and Veronica Cross, who also serves as curator for the show.

Each artist, selected from the Western Maine Art Group, has focused on nature, with such subjects as country fields, woodsy sanctuaries, ski mountains and auto graveyards.

Traficonte is an award-winning artist and educator proficient in both oils and pastels. She depicts lush Maine landscapes and does still lifes. She is also proprietor of the 100 Aker Wood Frame Shop and Art Supply Store in Norway.

Hardy is known to ski enthusiasts and art lovers for her light-filled watercolors, particularly ones depicting ski resorts and mountains. Hamilton, a retired Navy man and engineer, creates complex and structured oil paintings. Kahn, WMAG president, is inspired by Maine’s landscapes, particularly flora. Cross, who paints and does photography, is developing Maine-centric narratives in her work.

The reception will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Phoenix House, 9 Timberline Drive.

The group exhibit will be up through Feb. 28.

Artwork may be viewed during hours of operation or by appointment. During the winter, The Phoenix is open Monday through Friday at 2 p.m., Saturday at noon and Sunday at 10 a.m. when brunch is served.
