RUMFORD — A longtime employee who has developed a passion for Hope Association has taken over the leadership role.
Catherine Johnson, 45, of Mexico became the first female executive director of the organization that serves people with intellectual disabilities following a retirement party for her predecessor, Joseph Sirois, Tuesday morning.
“I love this place. The community is so supportive. My passion is to make sure everyone’s needs are met,” Johnson said Tuesday afternoon.
The nonprofit organization, housed in the former armory on Lincoln Avenue, serves just over 100 participants in the day and outreach programs and in the Rural Employment Network.
Johnson will oversee about 100 employees.
She came to Hope Association 16 years ago after working for five years at Pottle Hill in Mechanic Falls. She has served Hope as financial coordinator, residential director and assistant director.
Among her goals in her new position are plans for additional community involvement and greater volunteer work by the organization’s clients. She wants to more frequently acknowledge businesses and others in the community for their ongoing support for the Hope program.
“I have found a sense of community, camaraderie and compassion for each other here. People step up and take care of their own,” she said.
She hopes to expand the organization’s periodic newsletter to let everyone know how much area businesses and individuals help Hope with its mission.
Another change calls for staff members to take courses that will lead to certification as direct support professionals.
She is a graduate of Mt. Blue High School, Andover College and Kaplan University. She is the mother of two adult children and stepmother to one daughter.
“I’m honored to be executive director. I’m very proud of the support I have received from the employees, the state and local people,” she said.
