AUGUSTA — The Maine Recycles Week Steering Committee announces the schools and students recognized for their promotion of recycling and waste reduction strategies as part of Maine Recycles Week 2010.

Maine Recycles Week (MRW) is held annually from Nov. 8 to 15. During that week, municipalities and schools are asked to celebrate their efforts in recycling, plan activities to raise awareness of the importance of recycling and waste reduction efforts and encourage the purchase of products made from recycled materials.

This year’s entries came in from Aroostook to York counties. Three schools were selected from 21 participating schools that met or surpassed the criteria of the school contest: Bowdoinham Community School; St. John Regional Catholic School, Winslow; and W.G. Mallet School, Farmington.

Each school will receive a cash award of $500 to be used to help sponsor science or environmental experiences or to help improve recycling in their school.

In the MRW Poster Contest, more than 1,700 posters were received from schools across the state. Area school posters to appear on the 2011 Maine Recycles Calendar are those of Tayla Knapp, Livermore Falls High School; Lyndsey Hanna, William-Cone Elementary, Topsham; Lindsey Donahue, Livermore Falls High School; and Morgann Allard, Williams-Cone Elementary, Topsham.
