On Dec. 14, Sen. Susan Collins issued an e-mail, “Senator Collins Secures Provision to Extend Federal Truck Weights Limit Project in Maine,” in which she boasts about convincing her colleagues to include this extension in the earmark-pact Omnibus Spending Bill before the U.S. Senate.
It should seem obvious to many Mainers that Sen. Collins is ready to vote for passage of this fiscally irresponsible spending bill.
If the senator does so, she will be repudiating the will of the voters who, on Nov. 2, sent at clear message of fiscal accountability to the federal and state governments from all across the country, including Maine. Voters rejected the irresponsible measures taken to date that have failed to foster an economic recovery and threaten government bankruptcy and its subsequent economic chaos.
The 1,900-plus and over 6,000 earmarked-laden Omnibus Spending under consideration is the exact opposite of what these voters expect of the federal government.
Sen. Collins should have the backbone to vote against this bill. Otherwise, one can easily conclude that, like so many of her colleagues, she is apparently deaf to the outcries of voters and more concerned with their own political welfare than that of the country.
