LEWISTON — Attorney Shari B. Broder has been hired to teach a course in labor relations at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College.
Broder has been a labor mediator, arbitrator and facilitator since 1992 and has resolved thousands of disputes in the public and private sectors. Serving as chairwoman of the Maine Board of Arbitration and Conciliation for the past 11 years, she oversees a three-person panel of labor arbitrators that hears both grievance and interest arbitration as well as fact-finding cases.
A skilled facilitator of interest-based bargaining, she also serves on the arbitration panels of the American Arbitration Association and Federal Mediation and Conciliation, in addition to others.
Broder will teach employee relations during USM LAC’s spring 2011 semester. The course reviews trends in legal, social and economic aspects of U.S. labor-management relations. Topics include a historical overview of labor law, contract or personnel rule administration, grievance procedures, the negotiation process and dispute resolution within the labor-management context.
