AUGUSTA (AP) — Mainers may soon learn more about a mystery website that appeared during the state’s gubernatorial campaign.

On Monday, the state’s campaign ethics panel will take up a report summarizing an investigation into the website Cutler Files, which was highly critical of candidate Eliot Cutler. The independent finished second behind Republican Paul LePage.

Commission Executive Director Jonathan Wayne says the bipartisan ethics commission will decide what action to take after the investigation results are turned over.

Cutler’s said the website contained defamatory and false statements and asked the commission to determine if it’s required to comply with state campaign finance laws, which would reveal the site’s originators. A spokesman for the website’s sponsors refused to reveal the names of those behind it.
