AUBURN – Gladys D. Masterman of Weld, died of natural causes at the age of 94 at the Hospice House in Auburn on Sunday, Dec. 19.
She was an only child, born to Orland and Alice Tuttle Dunning on Sept. 9, 1916, in Carthage. The valedictorian of her high school class at Dixfield High School, she continued her education at Farmington Normal School and the Maine State Teacher’s College, Farnmington, and was employed for three years at Stowell-McGregor in Dixfield to support her college education. She was a well-known teacher in Mexico, Weld and Dixfield schools and returned to Mexico schools for the last half of her 33-year teaching career.
In 1942, she married Newton P. Masterman. They raised their family, Robert Newton Masterman and Linda Masterman, in their beloved hometown of Weld. They were longtime residents of the Weld community where her husband served as the Republic party chair for the town; she actively supported his endeavors. Together, they grieved the sudden passing of their son in 1969. Her husband later passed in 1996.
Gladys was a lifetime member of the Grange and the OES of Weld. She served as treasurer of the Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and of the Robertson Cemetery Association, Weld, for many years.
She enjoyed working summers at the Mt. Blue State Park and was an avid reader and cribbage player. Following her retirement, she enjoyed traveling to Scotland, Ireland, England and Alaska. She welcomed visits from former students who expressed their gratitude about her influence on their lives. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was able to impart her wisdom and encouraged them in understanding how to solve problems and adapt coping skills to life’s challenges. She was an active participant in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. These experiences now share as grateful memories of times well spent.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda E. Masterman of Weld; three grandchildren, Kimberly Schofield of Wilton, Kelly Mahoney of Louisberry, Pa., and Bret Schofield of Billerica, Mass.; two great-grandsons, Mackenzie Robert Sturevant of Louisberrry, Pa., and John Newton Schofield of Billerica, Mass.
Condolences and tributes may be shared with her family at www.wilesrc.com.
